Electrician hourly rates: compare minimum charges and the complete job

The lowest hourly rate is not always the lowest complete price. Compare the minimum attendance, billing increments, included testing and the work that will be left finished.

Normalise the unit before comparing

Some businesses quote an hour, some a half-hour and others a fixed job price. Multiply the advertised interval by the minimum attendance before comparing offers. Ask when the clock starts, how later increments are rounded and whether shopping for parts or a return visit is charged. A short task can still incur the minimum visit charge.

Describe the outcome, not just a symptom

For a planned job, specify the number and location of fittings, who supplies them and the finish expected around any disturbed surfaces. For fault finding, describe what stopped working and when, without attempting invasive checks. Ask how additional investigation will be approved if the initial attendance does not identify the fault.

Separate labour, products and documentation

Ask for labour, customer-supplied or contractor-supplied products, testing, documentation and making good to be identified. Confirm whether the business will check the suitability of any fittings you buy. A cheap product allowance can make one quote look lower while leaving important installation or finish work outside the price.

Agree access and authorisation

Tell the electrician about occupied rooms, the consumer-unit location, parking, managed-building rules and any restricted working times. Confirm who may approve additional work and the spending limit for the first visit. If work changes the agreed scope, record the variation before it starts rather than resolving the difference on the final invoice.

Choose relevant competence and retain the record

Ask what qualifications, registration and insurance are relevant to the proposed task, and independently check evidence where appropriate. Agree what inspection or test records will accompany completion. Keep the specification, invoice and supplied documentation together; a directory listing or attractive hourly price does not replace those checks.
