Room size alone does not determine a decorating quote. Surface preparation, ceiling and woodwork scope, the paint system and the expected finish all matter. Start with measurable quantities, then obtain labour and product prices.
Measure the actual surfaces
Measure the wall runs and height, then subtract excluded openings and surfaces. Count the ceiling, doors, frames and skirting separately rather than hiding them inside a single room figure. Record difficult access and furniture that must be moved or protected. These measurements help every decorator price the same work.
Preparation can dominate the difference
A quote for painting a sound surface is different from one that includes filling, sanding, stain treatment or removing an unsuitable finish. Ask the decorator to describe preparation, what defects are outside the scope and how unexpected surface problems will be agreed. Do not treat a fresh topcoat as a remedy for an unresolved moisture problem.
Use the product’s coverage figure
For a first quantity allowance, multiply net surface area by the proposed number of coats and divide by the selected product’s stated coverage in square metres per litre. Add an explicit allowance and round up to available container sizes. Coverage depends on the surface and application, so confirm the product specification and the decorator’s recommendation.
Confirm colour physically
Use Colour Studio to organise digital swatches and prepare a brief. Screen pixels and photographs are affected by lighting, exposure, display settings and printing. Take a suitable physical sample or choose a manufacturer swatch with the retailer, buy a tester and view it in the actual room before committing to the full quantity. A HEX value is not a manufacturer’s tint formula.
Build the budget from quoted inputs
Separate paint and consumables from preparation and application labour. Ask whether moving furniture, protecting floors, ceilings, woodwork, disposal and VAT are included. Record finish and product range as well as colour name; the same colour can look different in another finish. Retain the final manufacturer reference for later touch-ups.
